Luhambo Chairperson Gives His Update on Student Life at Luhambo

A chat with our Chairperson Thato, recorded 17 October 2026

On 17 October 2026 we sat down with our Chairperson, Thato, to hear what living at Luhambo is really like from someone who sees it every day. Thato is studying LLB at the University of Mpumalanga, and between lectures, assignments and his role as Chairperson, he has a clear view of what makes residence life work. Here is what he had to say.

Meet Our Chairperson

Thato is a law student at UMP and serves as Chairperson for Luhambo residents. Studying law means long hours and a lot of reading, so where he lives and studies matters. That is exactly why we wanted his honest take on the residence.

Life Outside the Books

We asked Thato what he enjoys most at the residence when he is not studying. His answer came without a second thought: football. "My favourite thing to do is play football at the football courts. Everybody knows I'm the king of the courts."

The courts are one of the busiest spots at Luhambo in the afternoons and on weekends. They give residents a way to stay active, blow off steam after a long day of lectures and get to know the people they live with.

The Perk That Makes Student Life Easier

When we asked which residence perk makes his life easier, Thato pointed straight to the study rooms. "We have two study rooms that are soundproof, with soundproof windows and soundproof doors."

For a law student, a quiet space to focus is not a luxury. It is the difference between getting through the reading and falling behind. Having it on site means no trips to campus late at night just to find somewhere quiet to work. He also mentioned the on site laundry. With laundry handled right there at the residence, he can spend less time on chores and more time on his studies.

How He Rates Living at Luhambo

Our last question was simple: out of 10, how would you rate living at Luhambo? "10 out of 10." He did not stop there, saying that if he could go higher he would rate it 100 out of 10. Coming from someone who lives here and represents the residents, that means a lot to our whole team.

Why We Asked

We can tell you about our amenities all day, but students want to hear from other students. Our residents are the best people to say what Luhambo is like, and we will keep sharing their stories here on the blog. Thank you to Thato for taking the time to chat with us.
